7 Ways to Get Healthy When You Don’t Have a Supportive Partner

7 Ways to Get Healthy When You Don’t Have a Supportive Partner

she is on a diet he is eating burgers unsupportive
To have and to hold from this day forward; for better, for worse; for richer, for poorer; in weight loss and muscle building; till death do us part. It is unlikely that these were your actual vows on your wedding day, but often the most difficult struggle a couple can face is when one member is considering a change, while the other prefers the status quo. That includes having kids, changing careers or homes, and, yes, getting into shape. You’d assume that the more attractive your partner becomes, the happier you would be, but this isn’t always the case. Increased attractiveness can foster insecurity, jealousy, resentment, and in extreme cases, emotional withdrawal and sabotage.
When a significant other becomes more attractive, and as a result, receives more and more attention, it can make the other person insecure. And if everyone starts turning their heads, look out! That person may start to wonder, “Why is my partner seeking so much attention? Is something already going on? If I find them attractive as they are, why isn’t that enough?” The answer is, of course, that we want to change to feel better about ourselves. Not that having heads turn as you enter the Christmas party is not a bonus, but it really is about meeting your own goals. And when the love of your life suddenly forgoes snuggling on the couch with Chinese takeout for a workout, resentment can enter the picture.
So how do you continue toward your fitness goals without letting it affect the relationship you have with your partner?
Begin with communication.
In the same way you should consult your doctor before beginning an exercise program, talk to your partner about what you are looking to accomplish. Explain that this is not motivated by a desire to attract other people, or anyone already in your life, but simply because you want to be healthier and feel better about yourself. Going into detail about your exercise plan and nutritional goals can take the unknown out of the equation, and possibly spark a desire in your mate. If you are still met with resentment, explain that you do not expect your partner to change just because you want to, and that you love him or her exactly as he or she is.
Ask for support.
The road to health can be a tough battle, and we can use all of the support we can get. Asking your partner to be supportive along this road can make a huge difference. Ask your mate to use positive comments regarding your progress, and to only ask if you are making a wise choice, if you actually slip up. This will allow your partner to feel like he or she is part of the process without giving him or her the power to control it. Encouraging your partner to join you along this path will elicit the greatest amount of support of all.
Get a training partner.
If your mate is unwilling to join you, find someone who is. Having a training partner creates greater motivation and retention than doing it alone. Obviously, find someone of the same sex, or at least someone who won’t threaten your mate. If you’re meeting resistance from your mate, working out with Lorenzo Lamas won’t increase the love at home. In addition to pushing one another to work out and eat healthy, talk with the training partner about your frustrations and ask about his or her own. If you are unable to find a Workout Buddy, remember your Team Beachbody Coach is always available to give you added motivation.
Don’t fall into eating pitfalls.
Grocery shopping, meal preparation, and snacking can be challenging in a household on the same eating path. But when you are trying to eat lean protein and vegetables, and your partner would prefer macaroni and cheese with a side of fries, the challenge can become World War III. If you are the primary shopper and food preparer, you have a lot of power over what your family consumes. Healthy food can taste great, and your mate might have no idea that you have altered his or her diet. With that said, you might need to make concessions for what your mate desires and make alterations to meal plans that can satisfy both people’s needs. Something as easy as adding an extra side for your mate can keep the peace. If you are not the primary meal provider, be prepared to take control over what you consume.
Also, make sure tempting treats are out of immediate reach. If you have a countertop full of potato chips and Oreos, eating carrot sticks might lose its appeal. Put all of your partner’s junk food in a specific drawer, and avoid it.
Try to work out around family time.
There are only so many hours in a day, and you should spend at least eight of those hours asleep. Finding time to exercise can be challenging as it is. And if that exercise time cuts into time that can be spent with a loved one, resentment can build. I have several friends who began workout programs that took them immediately from work to the gym daily, which got them home at 9 PM. Basically, they didn’t see their mate until Saturday, which did not go over well. Here is where Beachbody workouts are so helpful. If you can manage to crawl out of bed a bit earlier in the morning, you can begin your day with an amazing workout, and still be home in time to have dinner with your partner. If you’re a night owl, try working out after your love has retired for the evening. Being considerate of your time together can make all the difference in the world.
Keep the peace, but honor thyself.
Sometimes all of the communication and consideration in the world will not help a partner to understand your desire to change. If this is the case, short of seeking therapy, you must continue toward your goals and try to make it as undisruptive as possible to your partner. We realize that this is one of the most important relationships in your life, but no relationship is more important than the one you have with yourself. Walking away from health and fitness to please someone else will just lead you down the path of resentment. Keep moving forward, creating positive change, and try to still give energy to the relationship. Maybe your partner will not understand, but perhaps over time, he or she can learn to accept.
Relationships can be incredible adventures that offer great opportunities for growth, happiness, and security. Learning to navigate that adventure can be challenging, but ultimately well worth it. Always remember that your greatest tools are communication and compassion. Sometimes, trying to understand why our partner is resistant can help you figure out a way to explain your needs to them. And know that change will come in life, whether we create it or not. Figuring out how to foster support over something like lifestyle change can make the harder struggles in life easier to deal with later on. Having six-pack abs should not destroy “till death do us part.” And with communication, consideration, and some effective planning, perhaps your mate might learn to love your new look.

CIZE Results: Chelsea Lost 50 Pounds in Three Months!

Author: Beachbody

4796_700x350_Feb_2016_05_qchntg
Chelsea Graves lost 50 lbs. in three months with CIZE and Shakeology. She entered her results into the Beachbody Challenge, and won the $500 Daily Prize for February 5th!
Chelsea is an independent Beachbody Coach.
Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?
Before I started, I had no energy and was very sluggish. I hated the way I looked and the fact that I had no drive. I literally just sat and watched things happening around me. I was miserable. Nothing fit. I had to go to five different stores anytime I needed jeans, just to find some that fit right. I couldn’t stand to look at myself in the mirror. I would go to fast food restaurants five to six times a week and just add fuel to the fire. I avoided eye contact with people in public, because I was so ashamed of the way I looked.
What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?
My daughter. I did not want her to go through life with the same struggles I faced with weight and body image. I wanted to show her that being healthy and taking care of yourself is a good thing. I wanted to become a better mother. I wanted to be happier and able to run around with her. I wanted to have energy, even after working all day, to come home and spend the evening with her. I saw her picking up some of my bad habits, and I knew the only way to fix it was to change myself.
What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody help you overcome that challenge?
Staying motivated and looking forward to the next day was my biggest challenge. I am usually only able to stay motivated for a few days before I quit. CIZE was so fun to do, it was easy to keep going. I was ready to hit play every day, and push myself a little farther than I could go the day before. I didn’t have to focus on the fact that I could only do two reps, because there was nothing to count. I just had to move. I was able to connect with people doing the same programs and struggling with the same things I was.
What in particular did you like about the program you chose?
Shaun T made me feel like even though I was tripping over my feet, I was still doing great! The program built on itself. Once you had one routine down, you were ready for the next. It was not so intense that I was intimidated to start the next routine; I looked forward to it. On the days I couldn’t get the routines down, it was easy to laugh it off. I was able to keep from getting discouraged because of this. I never thought, “I can’t do this.”
Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of?
The weight I have lost in my face and in my stomach has made me feel so much better. I like what I see when I look in the mirror, and know it’s only going to get better. I am finally able to wear all the jeans I held onto and said someday I will wear those again. I’ve even had to buy smaller jeans. I am proud of myself for sticking with the program and not giving up. I feel amazing. I am happy and confident. I am becoming someone I never thought I could be!

How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program?
I started and finished a program…twice! That is something I have never been able to say. I am so inspired by myself and everyone who helped me to keep going. I can run and play with my daughter every day, and not get tired. I don’t worry about what people think of the way I look anymore. I have been able to step out of my comfort zone and become stronger in all areas of my life. I am thriving!
How did participating in a Challenge Group help you reach your goals? How did your group support you and keep you accountable?
I made several new friends in my Challenge Group. It was wonderful having so many other people doing the same thing I was. Being around people who had similar goals in mind and with such a positive environment, it was impossible not to keep going. I was able to laugh at myself and share struggles I was having with everyone, and received nothing but support.
How did your Team Beachbody Coach support you on your journey?
My Coach has been a huge part of my success. He helped push me through days I felt like nothing was changing. He constantly reminded me I was doing better than I had the day before. He worked with me when my nutrition was suffering, and got me back on a healthy eating schedule. Most importantly, he never gave up on me.
How did a Beachbody supplement, nutritional product, or program (such as Shakeology or Beachbody Ultimate Reset) support your transformation? What are the greatest benefits you gained? Did you see benefits to your energy, sleep, mood/mental clarity, or digestion/regularity?
love Shakeology. I notice on days I miss it or run out the door and forget it, I don’t have constant energy all day. It really gives me that extra push, and it lasts through the day. I don’t have the urge to snack all day. I am able to control portions better, because I’m not constantly hungry.
You can change your life, too. Take the Beachbody Challenge for the tools you need to Decide, Commit, and Succeed! Complete any Beachbody program, and enter your results for a free gift and a chance to win cash and prizes.

Ebony Lost 33 Pounds with 21 Day Fix and Shakeology

Ebony Lost 33 Pounds with 21 Day Fix and Shakeology

Author: Beachbody

Ebony Cornish lost 33 lbs. in six months with 21 Day Fix and Shakeology. She entered her results into the Beachbody Challenge, and won the $500 Daily Prize for February 1st!
Ebony is an independent Beachbody Coach.
Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?
Before joining my first 21 Day Fix Challenge Group, I was lethargic, sluggish, and had no energy. I had big dreams and wished to be better, but I just didn’t know where to start. I had started and failed so many times. I really lost faith that I’d ever be able to stick to something once and for all. I was just getting bigger and bigger, and hated looking in the mirror. I was miserable. I started unbuttoning my pants when I sat down, because my stomach was huge. My weight was becoming a problem, and I knew if I didn’t change something, it was only going to get worse! I wanted to feel better about myself! Somewhere between becoming a mother and wife, I really let myself go. My first child passed away, and it really hurt me so much. I tried to eat the pain away.
What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?
My best friend became a Beachbody Coach, and invited me to try the program. Honestly, I didn’t think it was going to work, but I trusted my friend. She explained to me how the Challenge Group, nutrition plan, and 30-minute workouts were totally doable! While it was going to be challenging, I was going to have support. At that point, I had nothing to lose. And plus, she told me if I didn’t like it, there was a money-back guarantee. I said: “What the heck. Let’s go.”
What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody help you overcome that challenge?
My biggest problem was consistency. If I didn’t see results fast enough, I’d get discouraged. If I had one “bad day,” I’d throw everything out of the window and just say, “Oh well.” Or I’d say, “I’ll start over on Monday,” which rarely happened. It was a vicious cycle. The Challenge Group and my Coach kept me engaged and motivated. When I wasn’t active in the group, my Coach would check on me and see if I was okay. The gym never did that. When I ate something bad, I’d talk to my Coach, who let me know that this is a journey and if I messed up, to get right back up and get back in the game! My Coach also kept little contests happening, which made working out fun! Oh, and I had a huuuuuge addiction to sweets! Shakeology is undeniably my favoritemeal of the day! It truly helped me kick my McDonald’s frappe addiction. Working out from home took away my excuses. The nutrition program is simple, and I’m always full. I just love how this program has changed my life. I am now a Coach!
What in particular did you like about the program you chose?
The workouts from home and Shakeology.

Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of?
I went from a 37-inch waist to currently 29. I don’t stop at fast food restaurants every day. I work out daily, and my son works out with me. I’ve lost 33 pounds, and I’m inspiring and encouraging others now — too many to name! I’m most proud of how I came out of my shell and started sharing my journey. I love helping others believe in themselves. I had stopped believing in myself, and someone helped me have faith again.
How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program?
My confidence is through the roof! Since accomplishing what I have so far, I know there is nothing I cannot do! If I set my mind to it, I can do it! I’m more positive now!
How did participating in a Challenge Group help you reach your goals? How did your group support you and keep you accountable?
Oh wow! I truly believe the magic is in the Challenge Group and the Coach. She leads a very engaging group, and I can always feel her passion and concern. She checks on me if I go ‘missing,’ and lets me know I can pick right back up! Some days I didn’t feel like working out, but when I saw other people posting, it encouraged me to get up! She is very transparent and open, which let me know that life happens but it’s all in how you respond to it. She recognized me in one Challenge Group for being interactive, and that really encouraged me. It made me feel like my presence was important!
How did your Team Beachbody Coach support you on your journey?
She called me, texted me, and just offered support and encouragement anytime I needed it! She told me I could do it!
How did a Beachbody supplement, nutritional product, or program (such as Shakeology or Beachbody Ultimate Reset) support your transformation? What are the greatest benefits you gained? Did you see benefits to your energy, sleep, mood/mental clarity, or digestion/regularity?
Oh wow! Shakeology is amazing! The digestion and regularity helped my stomach/waist get smaller. It gives me energy, and helped me kick my carb addiction! It’s soooo good!
You can change your life, too. Take the Beachbody Challenge for the tools you need to Decide, Commit, and Succeed! Complete any Beachbody program, and enter your results for a free gift and a chance to win cash and prizes.

Karen is an independent Beachbody Coach.
Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?
I was feeling sluggish and overweight. I needed to take control of my life. I was unhappy with myself. I was eating poorly way too often and not making good choices.
What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?
I have done Beachbody workouts in the past, and know they work. I knew I just needed to start one of the programs to get control of my eating and weight.
What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody help you overcome that challenge?Eating right has always been a challenge for me. There was always too much junk food available when I was hungry, so I constantly made bad choices. People at work always wanted to eat out. I first did 21 Day Fix EXTREME and lost 10 pounds in the 21 days. I fell off the wagon, and gained five pounds back. Right around the end of June, I saw pictures of me … oh my! I needed to start back up; enter CIZE. What an amazing program — still utilizing containers and dancing the pounds and inches away. I can’t tell you how this has made me feel. I am so blessed to have my Beachbody Coach and the support of our online family.
What in particular did you like about the program you chose?
I enjoyed CIZE, because I wasn’t doing conventional exercise. It was fun, worked up a sweat, and time flew by.
Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of?
I have lost weight and inches, and built up my self-confidence. I have changed my outlook on life, and try to spread what I have learned to others looking for a change.

Do Carb Cravings Increase On Shorter Days?
By Matt Schneiderman
When winter comes, our intake of comfort foods goes up. Whether you’re lounging about in balmy California or bundling up to brave the sub-zero temps of Minnesota, you’re likely to crave carbs — healthy ones like potato-rich stews and hearty soups (like this Hearty Vegetable Soup) and not-so-healthy-ones like overly sauced pastas or cookies. One possible theory for this is that the shorter days are to blame.
That’s because nearly everybody suffers from a low-grade sadness brought about by lack of sun exposure. “Human beings are far more complex than plants, but we still need sunlight,” says New York-based nutritionist Sophie Anson. “A lack of sunshine and vitamin D is linked to depression and fatigue.” In the winter months, many people have lower blood levels of serotonin — a chemical in the brain which, according to Dr. Wendy Miller, M.D., Chief of Nutrition and Preventive Medicine, Beaumont Hospital-Royal Oak, “produces a calming effect and helps relaxation.” A lack of sunlight negatively affects serotonin levels, much like a lack of confidence negatively affects sexual activity.
Big carb hits bump up production of serotonin and dopamine, another feel-good neurochemical that, according to Miller, increases motivation and alertness. After eating that candy bar, we can expect a short-lived improvement in our mood to counter the blahs. Unfortunately, this spike is followed by a sugar low and plummeting serotonin levels, leaving us feeling as bad as we did before we ate — or worse. “We crash and eat more again,” says Anson. It’s a downward spiral not unlike binge-watching the E! channel.

7 tips to counter those winter cravings:
1. Vitamin D drops or supplements can help, but nothing comes close to sunshine. Anson recommends getting outside for 15 minutes a day, and exposing yourself to the sun so your body can produce vitamin D. “Pull up your shirtsleeves or your pant legs and do it without wearing SPF. You’ll feel better than if you ate that piece of cake.” Of course, you won’t feel great at all if you pull up your pant legs too far — resulting in an indecent exposure arrest.
2. Focus on complex carbs. “Eating healthier carbs also has a beneficial effect on serotonin in the brain,” says Miller. Eat oatmeal with whole grains — wheat germ or flax seed — and lowfat milk, advises Shannon L. Szeles RDN, Clinical Dietitian at Beaumont Hospital-Royal Oak. “Or make a snack of a whole wheat English muffin with nut butter.” The combination will keep your sugar and hormone levels steady rather than causing spikes and crashes. Plus, it’ll help you get a little more fiber in your diet — and happy plumbing is always a mood lifter.
3. Alternatively, turn to low-fat proteins. “Some people won’t benefit as much from the complex carbs,” says Szeles. “Instead, they should have almonds as snacks.” Not sure whether you’re a complex carbs or low-fat protein person? Szeles advises that you track yourself for a few days: “Write down how you feel within 30-60 minutes after eating carbs. Hungry again? Sluggish? Stick to protein instead,” says Szeles. And if you’re still sluggish, try getting more than four hours of sleep at night.
4. Exercise. “It’s a surefire way to increase feel-good hormones,” says Szeles. Do you normally jones for a late-afternoon cookie? Take the stairs up and down a few flights instead. It won’t taste as good, but it’ll release the same hormones in the brain.
5. Establish a routine. “An exercise regimen and eating with consistency will stabilize everything,” says Szeles, “by keeping your hormone levels on an even keel.” This routine should include Facebook breaks, taken as necessary.
6. Don’t ignore the cravings. “Don’t think, ‘Oh, I’m craving these really bad foods, so I’ll get rid of all the carbs,’” says Anson. “Excluding all carbs from your diet does more harm than good — you’ll just feel hungrier.” Rather, address the cravings in a more healthful manner. You’ll feel a lot better with a snack like yogurt or almonds — something that delivers sustainable energy. Of course, if you really want the cookie, eat the cookie — within moderation, of course.
